The Rise of Audi: Humble Beginnings to Classy Brand

These days, Audi is a brand synonymous with class and sophistication. It was not always like this, though, as the German brand comes from humble beginnings and has had a fascinating rise to the top. This post will look at the history of Audi and why they are now considered one of the world’s top luxury car manufacturers.


The origins of the Audi brand can be dated back to 1885 with the formation of the Wanderer Company, which later became a brand of Audi. August Horch later established A. Horch & Cie in Cologne and after a handful of name changes, Audi Automobilwerke GmbH Zwickau was officially established. The first Audi car was launched in 1910 – the Audi Type A Sport-Phaeton with the Type B being released in the same year. The brand quickly made a name for itself with Horch leading his team to 3 successive victories in the Austrian Alpine Run before taking a position in the ministry of transport.

The Logo & WW2

The iconic logo of the four interlocking rings came later with the merger of 4 companies in 1932. With a new partnership in place, Audi started to focus on technology, and this is something that they are still considering pioneers into this day. Of course, World War 2 changed the pathway for the business as they started making armored vehicles for the German military and later had factories dismantled during war reparations.

Daimler-Benz & VW

Following the difficulties of the war, the company was reformed and launched in 1949 but with no suitable plant for mass production. Eventually, Daimler-Benz took an 87% holding in Auto Union which was then increased to 100% in 1959 and the Audi name was resurrected in 1965 after 25 years. VW then had a 50% holding in the company in 1964 and the chair of VW was impressed with the Auto Union Engineers allowing them to produce their models.

The Modern Era

Since this point, Audi has gone from strength to strength and is now considered one of the premium car brands in the world. The brand is synonymous with class, elegance and sophistication and is known for producing high-tech vehicles with luxury interiors. Currently, there are many popular models in a range of categories.
