Brief History About Smart Automobile
Smart Automobile was founded in 1994 in Germany by Daimler AG. The Smart brand was originally created by Swatch in the late 80’s to create a small compact city car. However an automotive partner was required to allow Swatch to build the car and after talks with several car manufacturers, Daimler signed a deal with Swatch, with the first production Smart car being built in 1998.
Eventually Daimler bought out Swatch and then added new models to the line up, including the Roadster. The Roadster, designed as a fun car, sold well, however due to a large number of warranty issues, ceased production in 2006.
Smart are still going strong and concentrating on their small city cars, with electric versions of their Fortwo now available.
