Additional Info: Now uses what Ford called the “Fox” platform, slightly longer than the Mustabg II, but with less weight. Numerous optional packages available to upgrade the suspension, appearance and performance. Engine choices from 1979 were an 88bhp 2.3 straight 4, a 143bhp 2.3 Turbo (0-60 in 9.1 secs), a 119bhp 2.8 V6, an 85bhp 3.3 litre engine, a 134bhp 302cu V8 (0-60 in 8.2 secs). 1980 sees the 302 reduced to 255cu and only 119bhp. 1981 3.3 now 91bhp. In 1982 the 302 is back, but called the 5.0 H.O with 157bhp, GT name returns. In 1983 Ford brought back the convertible and engine choices were now a 112bhp 3.8 V6, the now fuel injected 2.3 Turbo putting out 145bhp and the 302 now with a 4 barrel carb with 175bhp. 1984 saw a lot of changes (too many to mention here), but included SVO’s, Fords Special Vehicle Operations having some input into the Mustang. Engines were as follows 88bhp 2.3, 145bhp 2.3 turbo, 112bhp 3.8 V6, 165bhp 5.0 V8 and the 174bhp SVO 2.3 Turbo (0-60 in 7.5 secs, 1/4 mile in 15.5 secs). In 1985 the 5.0 gets true dual exhausts and other modifications bringing power upto 210bhp (0-60 in 7.1 secs, 1/4 mile in 15.5 secs) and even the SVO midway through the year gets a boost in power to 205bhp. 1986 sees a slight drop in power due to a change in lower octane fuel. |

Additional Info: 1987 sees a restyle and a few more improvements, including electronic fuel injection on the 5.0 giving a power output of 225bhp. Not a lot of changes between 1987-1992 in term of performance, but in 1993 an SVT (Special Vehicles Team) Mustang Cobra/Cobra R was built with a 235bhp 5.0 V8 (0-60 in 5.6-5.9 secs, 1/4 mile in 14-14.5 secs). |
