Daihatsu LogoBrief History About Daihatsu

Daihatsu was founded in 1951 in Japan from Hatsudoki Seizo Co. Ltd (which was founded in 1907) and concentrated on making small cars.

In 1967 Toyota took shares in the company.

The company did export to Europe from the 60’s but didn’t make much of an impact until the 80’s, when it also started to export to the USA and also started to build 4×4’s.

In 1988 Toyota takes control by having 51% of the shares. However sales are poor in the US and Europe and so in the early 2000’s gradually pull out of the US and then Europe by 2013 to concentrate on countries closer to home.
